The Fellowship of Christian Students was started out six years ago in 1999 by a Korean IVCF missionary to Mongolia, Mr Park. From a small group of 30 members on 27th February 1999, it has grown into a membership of over 100 students and staff. FCS has also expanded its reach to the different sectors of Ulaanbaatar (UB) with the opening of FCS 2 and 3. Each of these offices is responsible for a sector of the city. In the summer of 2002, four Mongolian staff has joined the ministry. The most recent additions were in September 2005 with three new Mongolian staff. Currently, there are a total of seven Mongolian staff workers in FCS.

Large group (LG) meetings are usually held weekly at the respective offices. Worship followed by a sermon by the staff or an invited speaker and fellowship time is the usual program for these LG meetings. For each one of the Christian students in FCS, they have a syllabus to complete. This is accomplished in four or five years. Every FCS member has to first join the EBS groups, followed by Basic Bible Study (BBS) groups and then they became cell members or leaders. This is illustrated below:
Other than this basic structure, FCS members also do street evangelism and mission trips to the countryside. Training conferences are also conducted for the Cell group leaders and students.

“We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints– and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.” 2 Cor 8:1-5 The example of the Macedonians and the conviction in the world of the Fellowship of Christian Students in Mongolia was what compelled the Council in 03/04 to begin our support of the Mongolian ministry. The Lord arranged for the wonderful beginning at the IFES World Assembly 2003 when 3 exco members met Tom (IVCF staff seconded to Mongolian FCS) and caught a glimpse of the exciting pioneering work in Mongolia - 2 over lunch and one at the soccer field.
Having presented the work and the needs of the young movement in Mongolia, VCF was then convicted of the need to look beyond our little circle and bless the saints in another country. It was also a time when financially, we were on a decline. But that was not enough to stop us especcially when the Macedonians gave beyond their means, we were left with no excuses.
The years of partnership with the Mongolian FCS in prayer and practical means has been more than a blessing for them. It has been a reward for us as we were granted the privilege and joy in sharing in God’s mighty work in growing this young movement and still continues to do. May we be faithful and obedient to the this for as long as the Lord requires it of us. The pleasure has been ours and the glory, the Lord’s.
In June 2005, three VCFers joined a Hong Kong FES team for an English Camp in FCS 1. The English Camp reached out to tertiary students studying in the western area of Ulaanbaatar City. Below are some of their thoughts.
Jasmine’s Thoughts:
Having been one of the 3 who first encountered the missionary and work in Mongolia, it has always been in my heart to go see the ministry one day. The Lord who gives us the desires of our heart brought the opporunity about when FES HK which organises trips to Mongolia every summer offered to take us along. This trip has been for me more than one that just allowed me to see where our money has been going to. It is one that affirmed our decision to have a part in this work and it has been that has changed my life. Among the many things that left a deep impact in me, were the prayer meetings that I attended with the FCS staff and students. I saw the heart of God’s people on their knees. The presence of the Lord and the move of the Spirit is always so evident in each prayer meeting, that I did not even have to know Mongolian to know what their hearts are crying out for. At every prayer meeting, I wept together with them, crying out for the salvation of individuals and of the land. Never have I felt so much, wept so much and prayed so much with and for a people.
Another thing that hit me hard was when one of the students asked me, “Why is it that students in other countries read the Bible and pray and they grow, while we in Mongolia do the same, we grow so slowly?” Emotions welled up when I heard that. Because in that simple question, was a much deeper hunger and desire for growth, a godly dissatifaction of their own spiritual state, a cry for more. It was this question that made me realise how much more we have been given and our growth is certainly no responsible reflection of the much we have been given. With hardly any books or bible study resources in the Mongolian language, I see in Mongolia, God’s people who wants only to seek with all their heart. And my answer to that brother (Arinbold) was Jer 29:13,14 where God promised that “You will seek me and find me. When you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you”. He will never shortchange those who seek Him with all their heart and I believe He is already at work mightily in the land of Mongolia where His people are just so hungry for Him!
