When Christians think of the word "missions", we often associate it with a higher nobler calling that has to do with serving "poorer", "lost" people in a less-developed area outside of our home country. Traditional missionary work involves bringing the good news of Christ to places where people have not heard of him, translating the Bible into native languages, helping to combat social ills and diseases, teaching and medical work. These are indeed necessary. Yet, we cannot deny that we live in a world today that is increasing different. Increasing challenging. This calls for a re-looking at the way we think about mission. Technology has radically changed the way we communicate. It has also brought along a whole range of issues regarding bio-ethics, nuclear technology etc. Globalization has resulted in the transcendence of boundaries and seen cultures and politics merging across the world, enriching society at times and dividing mercilessly in others. Lines are increasingly blurred. Religious beliefs come face to face more so than ever. Postmodernism that rejects absolute truth and meta-narratives have posed significant challenges for the Christian world. Facing a different world today, one wonders how the mission of the Church would look like today. How do we respond? There will also be announcements about G Cube sign up! So watch out for that! |
